Homero nos habla también de Tersites, que divertía a los guerreros griegos en las retaguardias de las áreas de combate y Virgilio relata las fiestas del Ager, en las que personajes enmascarados, o maquillados, improvisaban diálogos humorísticos y representaban costumbres populares.<br /><br />Se cree que la palabra "payaso" se deriva de un tal Pagliaci, pero sobre este hecho en realidad no hay mucha documentación<br />Lo que sí es cierto es que se considera como el primer payaso moderno de la historia a Giuseppe Grimaldi, célebre a tal punto que el gran Charles Dickens escribió su biografía Nacido en 1778, Grimaldi comenzó a actuar desde que tenia dos años y fue mimo, cómico y volatinero. Los expertos lo consideran el pionero del genero Clown, término que, sin bien en nuestro idioma traduce payaso, tiene en el inglés una procedencia bien diferente.
